February 2, 2025, will go down in history as the South Wales Pan Disability League (SWPDL) kicked off for Barry Town United PDFC and Cambrian United.
These two teams have some history together in 11-a-side games, with the most recent match between them taking place in the 2023/24 season, in which Barry came out victorious with a 10-2 win at Jenner Park. As Jenner Park was unavailable for this match, it was played on a 3G pitch at a local school in Barry.
Judging by recent history and the way Barry had been playing in the past few weeks, they were confident they could secure a win.
Their confidence soared after 15 minutes when Ibby let fly with the outside of his boot after the ball fell to him following a poor goal kick from the Cambrian keeper.
Joe made it 2-0 after 26 minutes following some good work by the Barry defense and Jason to regain possession. Jason played Joe through, and he calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the six-yard box via the post.
As half-time approached, Barry was awarded a penalty after some excellent play down the left wing by Brandon and Matty. Matty was then fouled in the box, leaving the referee with no choice but to point to the spot. Up stepped Joe, who made it 3-0 as the ball bounced in off the post.
Half-time score: Barry 3 - Cambrian 0
During the half-time talks, substitutions were made, and a few encouraging words were shared by coach Dave to ensure Barry maintained their lead.
They did just that, as less than two minutes into the second half, Barry—and in particular, Joe—found the net again to make it 4-0. At this point, Barry thought they had put the game beyond doubt, but Cambrian had a different idea. After kickoff, Barry failed to deal with a through ball, allowing Cambrian’s number 9 to put the ball beyond Brad and make it Barry 4 - Cambrian 1.
Despite conceding, Barry was still eager to keep scoring to boost their goal difference, which could come into play if points are level at the end of the season.
Barry’s fifth goal came from Brandon after being played through by captain Jason.
The sixth and seventh goals were scored in quick succession by Euan. The sixth came after some excellent football played from back to front by Barry following a goal kick, with Zach assisting Euan for the finish. The seventh was a simpler goal, so to speak, but Euan still had work to do to put it beyond the Cambrian keeper.
The eighth goal was scored by Phil, who stayed up following a corner. After some Ronaldo-inspired skill from Lewis, the ball fell to Matt, who helped it forward. Phil was the quickest to react, finding himself one-on-one with the keeper. He managed to head the ball over the keeper before tapping it in from around two yards out.
As the clock ticked down to full-time, Curtis got in on the act after good work down the left by Euan. Euan squared the ball across to an unmarked Curtis, who smashed it into the net, sealing a 9-1 victory for Barry.
Full-time score: Barry 9 - Cambrian 1
