First game for Barry Town Pan Disability FC in 2024 took place on a cold, windy day at the Buttrills Field against Vale of Glamorgan Championship side St Athan FC 3rds.
As the players finished the warm ups and a few last minute tatics from the respective coaches of both teams, it was time for kick off.
Barry started the game with a very up and at them approach and was on the front foot from the first minute, creating numerous scoring opportunities but wasn't able to find a way past the St Athan keeper. As Barry keep on plodding to get in front they finally did so from Costa, after a throw in taken from JJ on the right hand side of the pitch, Costa did really well to hold off his defender and curled a beautiful left foot shot into the far corner beyond the reach of the keeper. 1-0 to Barry, which was very deserving. From then on Barry continued to dominate and had a few more chances to extend the lead and finally made the dominance count when Brandon was bearing down on goal after a lovely first touch header to set himself then finished low and hard into the near post which meant Barry went 2-0 up. After this St Athan came alive a bit more and called the Barry keeper Luke and the Barry defence into action which they dealt with well. With half time approaching both teams were happy to go into the second half with the scoreline at 2-0 to Barry.
As the second half got underway St Athan had the wind with them which helped them out as there keeper had a very good out of hands kick, these conditions didn't suit the Barry defence well as the ball was swerving all over the place.
The conditions meant that Barry conceded lots of chances and corners, which eventually led to St Athan grabbing a goal back to make it 2-1, a corner got floated in from the right side, all the way to the back post and headed in.
Barry had some very impressive chances to extend their lead but like in the first half they were unable to find a way past the St Athan keeper.
As the game was coming towards the end, St Athan had a great chance to draw the game 2-2, but a goal saving tackle from coach Taran prevented this from happening.
As the full time whistle blew, the match ended in a victory for Barry with the scoreline 2-1.
